HIV Edmonton is seeking men to help us review a Community Based Research Survey.

We are undertaking a Community Based Research Project to assess the sexual attitudes, practices, and health knowledge of men who have sex with men (MSM) in Edmonton. The project will also seek to determine the barriers that MSM face when accessing sexual health services.

The involvement consists of attending one meeting. The dates and location are as follows:

Nellie McClung: A One “Person” Play – written by Kathy Morrell, starring Wendy Jean Smith, and directed by Robert Loucks, formerly of Edmonton.

The play will be presented at the Royal Alberta Museum Theatre on Friday, November 13 and Saturday, November 14 at 8 PM. Tickets are $25 for either night from TIX on the Square, 9930 – 102 Avenue, 780-420-1757. The Senate of Canada this fall recognized the 80th anniversary of the “Persons Case” and appointed the Famous Five as Senators for their triumph in having women declared “persons”.

Nellie McClung, Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby and Henrietta Muir Edwards had made the trip to London to meet with the British Privy Council, who supported their contention that women were persons. The Election Act of the Dominion of Canada was amended to remove the statement “No idiot, lunatic, criminal or woman shall vote.”

Nine days of non-stop events that will cover the spectrum around the theme of the Queer Body with everything from drag to roller derby will all be part of Exposure: Edmonton’s Queer Arts and Culture Festival beginning Friday, November 13 and running until Saturday, November 21, 2009.

In support of October as Domestic Violence Awareness month and in support of our city’s women’s shelters, the Women’s Centre is looking to donate children’s artwork to La Salle. If you’re interested in an afternoon of fun artistic endeavours, please join us either Thursday, October 29th or Friday, October 30th for a good cause.

The Women’s Centre Collective is hosting its first ever sex toy party!  Lauren from the Traveling Tickle Trunk is coming out to party with us TOMORROW, Oct. 24th at 7pm (address will be sent to those who RSVP – its in an apartment very close to the University). She will be bringing some of their fantastic  products for us to check out along with her invaluable knowledge about  the toys and sexuality in general. It will be a fun and casual event  and a chance for us to get to know each other.

(If you’re a little shy about actually ordering toys but are nonetheless interested, don’t worry! Ordering is done in a separate   room so you can have some privacy.)

October 6th 2009 Meeting Minutes

Our next meeting will be Tuesday October 20th in 420 SUB. At 3:30 we’ll be discussing fundraising. Bring ideas for fundraising, and quotes or logos for shirts! At 4:30 we’ll start on the regular meeting stuff including November events planning. If you hae something you want to plan, or even a vague idea of something we should do, please share!
As always, newcomers are definitely welcome as are parents with children (or, we can reimburse you for childcare during the meeting.)

For those who can’t make it, minutes will be posted semi-promptly this time!
